Everyone,

Once in a while some people are asking if I am really hearing or HoH. Rolling my eyes..... no no no I am PRO DEAF!!!!!!!!!!

Reason... I act like a hearing person.... I used to be an oralist until I learned to sign at age 13 when the school headmaster, who believed in oralism only, passed away. The new headmaster believed in Total Communication... signing, talking, writing, etccccc. I signed slowly until I attended Gallaudet. I picked up and signed faster. Then I married Southern Gentleman with the speedy ASL skills. Some people keep asking me to interpret what he said. Haha  I still use lip movements while I talk. It is a habit. If I eat food, then I close my mouth and sign. Some people chew and talk at the same time.... disgusting!!!!!

Wearing hearing aids didn't help me hearing and speaking well. I have known some pro deafies with hearing aids talking on the phone.... so what? It doesn't make them HoH. No!

It doesn't matter how well you can hear or speak. You have to check with the audiologist to get the results to know the real identification intead of assuming. If you need to know, then see your doctor or audiologist to ask.

Being deaf profoundly means to be unable to hear anything at all.

Wearing hearing aids doesn't make HoH. Haha.. who said that? It doesn't make any difference if you wear hearing aids, speaking clearly or not. You are identified as profoundly deaf thru audioigram testing to see how you hear thru various dB levels. If you hear at 90 to 120 dB (decibel ... sound), then you are prfoundly deaf. If you hear at 75 to 85, you are still deaf, but hearing a little. If you do at 65 to 70, then you are HoH. I think if I am correct about the numbers, but I am not sure.

Mine is 120 dB or above. When I was a teenager.... right was 80 and left was 85.

hahahah i agree with u  mermaid  wearing a hearing aid being profoundly deaf dont make u hoh hahhaha very agreeable

im in that db range profoundly  deaf myself  went from    65  db to that  120 db in twenty five yrs  geez hahahaha

HOH...Stone deaf..profound deaf....hearing impaired...deaf mute...can't hear well...old-age deafness...deaf and dumb...can't hear...lost my hearing...partly deaf...little deaf....somewhat deaf....can't hear out of 1 ear...can't hear, but read lips...let me adjust the "static" on my hearing aid and I'll be able to hear ya.....

Jeez!! The list goes on and on....What Am I??....."well, I just crawled out from under a rock...."....."the space shuttle just dropped me off and left me"...."Did ya hear that"???

Sometimes a "sense of humor" can expel the awarkness of dealing with the hearies ....It's just when they start "shouting" in my ear....or opening their mouths so wide when they talk their tonsils are showing...

I had a very unpleasant encounter at a dinner party I was invited to ....the host was my friend...she made it a point to introduce me around....When she told this guy...this is ------ , she is deaf....He said...Ohhhhh, took out his pen and pad and wrote...."Can you read?".....

I said loudly....NO!....Left him dumb-founded!....
