I have a friend that is considering one of those free antivirus programs. I have talked to some people that recommend AVG and others say to use Avast. Just looking for some input here as to your experience with them. I have been told that AVG will slow a PC down quite a bit. Anyone use these programs?

I have AVG  & Zone Alarm on my laptop.  It does slow it down but I have had no other problems with it.

I had AVG on my older computer for a while and didnt have any problem so far. Right now,  I am using McAfee SecurityCenter plus on my newer computer. I buy it from eBay every year because it is cost less money than retail store.  McAfee is good for one year with free update.

I read some other people opnion on Google site about AVG. Some people have a  problem with it and some are don't. I guess that is individual computers. Remmy free software are do not accure prefect.  Some may have bugs. Some people don't have problem so that is depending.

I think it depends of security settings??? If default is set the "highest" then it'll probably be slow? Install and check it out. On the otherhand, setting it "low" may invite hacker problems and other undesirables.

I used to run Zone Alarm. It's ok. Now run Norton with absolutely no problems (except for a little sluggishness at startup).

Sometimes you get what you pay for.

Ok respond to your question... I runs own cpu business over here, as your information, both are good, and good running of effective...u gotta to remember those anti virus programs always based on Memory to make sure..to run so faster, and smooth.

for example, u have a 256 MB, and AVG ...its gonna take so long to scan, if you have like...

Windows XP,  2 GB of Memory,  I know Windows XP likes to eat 256 MB alone, and left of 1.5 of GB, can use for avg, aim, or whatever, ...will speed it up.

Vista like to hold 1 GB, and more memory for other programs to run.

I do have VISTA Utlimare, I know must to have 1 GB, and I need 3 GB memory more ..to support to other stuffs, its fast and smooth. I do have AVG 8.0, no problem, and I have own firewall as well...

Thats simple to know.

I did scanned AVG 8.0 on one friend's of cpu has 256, or 512 either, takes me to finish about 1 1/2 to 2 hours, and I told friend installed 1 GB memory, takes 37 minutes to scan the viruses, see the difference of results.

I recommend them not buy Norton 360, or others,  its gonna hurt the computer's perferonace as well...as other pay virus programs not effective as AVG, and AVAST, ....
