My interest in American Sign Language began when I was about 13 years old. I noticed a Deaf couple Signing, one was hearing and one was Deaf.
After that day I started going to the local Library to borrow books and try to learn what the Deaf people were saying. I did not have the financial means at that age to purchase any books on Sign Language so I did the best I could.
As time went on my interest grew and later in my life I met a friend who also had an interest in Sign Language. He had a book, that he later gave to me and I still have, American Sign Language Dictionary and together we tried to learn from the book.
I moved to Texas from Oregon State and while in Texas perused my need for learning Sign Language. I took Sign Language courses, of Campus, with Lamar University and received a Certificate from that class.
In addition I became involved in the Deaf Community and made many friends. My Sign Language Skills grew tremendously. I purchased my first VP and (eye-2-eye) with my own funds so that I could communicate with my friends that I had made. I attended all Social Events that were in my area and also went to a Deaf Church where I helped with the deaf and hearing children in pre-school. I also helped Deaf people order food in restaurants and at Deaf Garage Sales. An older couple, Mr. and Mrs. Franklin Tippett took me under their wings and said they were adopting me as their grandchild. Mr. Tippett has passed now but I am in constant contact with Grandma Tippett on my VP along with many friends I made while in Texas.
I returned to Oregon and began seeking out the Deaf Community in my area. I was able to qualify for a Sorenson VRS because of my disability with an "Audio Processing Disorder DYSLEXIA and DEAFNEE,AND SO-CALLED "WORD DEAFNESS" and my abilities to communicate effectively with the Deaf and ASL being my main means of communications.
I volunteered as a Sign Language Teachers Helper at Lilas, in Eugene and I was with them for two years. I also started a Deaf Coffee Chat at Starbucks and Pizza Socials during the month. Since I have left Eugene, my Deaf Friend, also the Deaf Teacher at Lilas, Ingrid , has taken on this responsibility and it still is active today. I now volunteer at OSD in various locations and enjoy it more than anything in my life. The deaf community has been the biggest influence in my life.
I feel I have a great deal to offer OSD if given the opportunity. I will continue to volunteer at OSD, as long as they will have me, I am here for them and the Deaf Community.
